India among top 3 countries to use credit cards for online shopping
Research firm Nielsen released its latest report the “Nielson Global Online Survey on Internet Shopping Habits” with some interesting facts on online shopping behavior from online shoppers around the world.
According to the survey India came in third with 84% of internet users using credit cards for online shopping behind 91% Turkish and 86% Irish users who used credit cards while shopping online. The most important to note were that over 875 million consumers had shopped online globally and Visa was the most popular credit card payment method.
More than 70% Indians also said they bought airline tickets online in the last 3 months making travel the fourth most popular shopping category on the Internet. The report also pointed out that users tend to stick to the shopping sites they are familiar with, over 60% of users said they mostly shopped on the same site. Users also relied on fellow shoppers recommendations on choosing an online site to shop at.
Bruce Paul, VP, Customised Research, Nielsen US says, “When The Nielsen Company conducted its first global survey into Internet shopping trends two years ago, approximately 10% of the world’s population (627 million) had shopped online. Within two years, this number has increased by approximately 40% (to 875 million).”
The latest survey, conducted from October to November 2007, polled 26,312 Internet users in 48 markets from Europe, Asia Pacific, North America and the Middle East. The survey is representative of all Internet users aged 15+.
